John Barrows was raised in Glendive, Montana, finished high school college in Missoula, Montana. He worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad, Great Northern Railway, as a telegrapher; for the Railway Express Agency, as general agent Owatonna, Minnesota; and in Great Falls, Montana as assistant terminal manager for Garrett Freightlines. He then entered into newspaper work, serving as editor of the Wolf Point Herald News (Montana), Assistant Publisher of the Grant County Journal (Ephrata, Washington), Publisher of the Ravalli Republic, Hamilton, Montana, and Publisher and co-owner, of the Buffalo Bulletin, Buffalo, Wyoming and Publisher, of the Dillon Tribune. He is interested in railroad history.
