In 2008 the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, now BNSF, transferred a large collection of materials to institutions in the Saint Paul, Minnesota area. The Great Northern Railway Historical Society received approximately 4700 items consisting of right of way maps, plat maps, station maps, filing maps, geographic maps, state maps, mechanical drawings, as well as facility and structure drawings. In addition the materials contained engineering study records, and documents and ledgers of various kinds. The date range for these materials are from 1854 to 2008.
The Cordell Newby Collection consists of 1902 color photographs of Great Northern Railway Company subjects, principally equipment and locations, taken by Mr. Newby in multiple locations between Chicago, Illinois and Seattle, Washington between 1971 and 1988. The Great Northern Railway Authority for Expenditure (AFE) Collection consists of approximately 150,000 paper files. The contents document construction and modifications to the railroad and nearby structures, and include business and finance records, engineering drawings, maps, and correspondence. Records range from 1888 to 1984 and include some from predecessor (e.g. St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railroad) and successor (Burlington Northern Railroad) companies. The Great Northern Railway- Blueprint-Authorization for Expenditure Collection (GN_Blueprint_AFEs) was created by the Great Northern Railway Historical Society from materials at the Jackson Street Roundhouse. Blueprints and other documents stored with Great Northern Railway Authorization for Expenditure files were gathered and cataloged as a separate collection with reference to the Authorization for Expenditure number where available. In addition to Great Northern Railway blueprints, some supplier blueprints, catalogs, and other supplemental materials for individual projects are included. Blueprints are categorized as Engineering drawings when depicting buildings, track and other structures and as Mechanical drawings when applicable to rolling stock. Other (minor) categories of documents include maps and plats, photographs and printed ephemera.
Scans of railroad clearance diagrams for the Great Northern Railway Dakota Division, Mesabi Division, Minot Division and Willmar Division. The diagrams show the space available to run railroad cars and loads along the track between stations on the line. Many dates are illegible, but those that are readable fall between 1957 and 1969.

The Jim Parker Collection includes 135 photographs of Great Northern Railway and Northern Pacific Railroad locomotives, freight cars and passenger cars.
The Norm Keyes Collection is comprised of black and white prints of Great Northern Railway steam engines, work equipment, approximately 3650 photographic slides, and film negatives - approximately 5500. A limited number of photographs of equipment from other railroads and logging railroads are included.
