The Great Northern Railway Authority for Expenditure (AFE) Collection consists of approximately 150,000 paper files. The contents document construction and modifications to the railroad and nearby structures, and include business and finance records, engineering drawings, maps, and correspondence. Records range from 1888 to 1984 and include some from predecessor (e.g. St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railroad) and successor (Burlington Northern Railroad) companies. The Great Northern Railway- Blueprint-Authorization for Expenditure Collection (GN_Blueprint_AFEs) was created by the Great Northern Railway Historical Society from materials at the Jackson Street Roundhouse. Blueprints and other documents stored with Great Northern Railway Authorization for Expenditure files were gathered and cataloged as a separate collection with reference to the Authorization for Expenditure number where available. In addition to Great Northern Railway blueprints, some supplier blueprints, catalogs, and other supplemental materials for individual projects are included. Blueprints are categorized as Engineering drawings when depicting buildings, track and other structures and as Mechanical drawings when applicable to rolling stock. Other (minor) categories of documents include maps and plats, photographs and printed ephemera.
Scans of railroad clearance diagrams for the Great Northern Railway Dakota Division, Mesabi Division, Minot Division and Willmar Division. The diagrams show the space available to run railroad cars and loads along the track between stations on the line. Many dates are illegible, but those that are readable fall between 1957 and 1969.
